About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the Medical Library Association of Nigeria is to foster unity among professional librarians in health sciences libraries and health-related institutions in Nigeria. The purpose of the Association is to promote the welfare of the professionals in order to enable them to contribute positively and effectively to the utilisation of education and healthcare information resources for medical education, research, patient care and healthy living of Nigerians and humanity.

Getting to know your MLA-NG

The Medical Library Association of Nigeria (MLA-NG) was established on 3rd December 2009. The Association also serves as the Medical Library section of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA). MLA-NG is also a member of the Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa (AHILA) and an international partner to the Medical Library Association (U.S.A). Our membership strata include:

  • Institutional (for health sciences libraries in Nigeria);

  • Regular (actively engaged in professional library or bibliographical work in medical or allied scientific fields or who hold professional qualifications in medical librarianship or related fields);

  • Fellows (persons who have made outstanding contribution to the advancement and purposes of the Association and who have been regular members);

  • Honorary (persons, organisations or institutions interested in health sciences librarianship);

  • Students (persons enrolled in degree or diploma programmes of library and information sciences);

  • International membership (persons and institutions outside  Nigeria who have interest in health sciences librarianship)

Objectives

The objectives of the Association are to:

  • foster the art and science of medical librarianship;

  • educate, support and strengthen health sciences librarians to provide effective and efficient services that continually meet the needs of their library users;

  • promote cooperation and communication among its members;

  • develop and promote the dissemination of evidence-based healthcare information;

  • promote closer association medical and allied sciences librarians;

  • promote high standard of medical library education, research and practice;

  • belong to similar international bodies and participate in international activities in the field of medical and allied sciences librarianship;

  • carry out lawful activities necessary to protect the interest of its members and the profession.
